Govt working on urban mobility scheme to promote electric vehicles

The Indian government is working on a Green Urban Mobility Scheme in order to promote the use of hybrid/electric vehicles and non-fossil fuels among others for public transport.

???The proposal will be finalised after taking views from the concerned stakeholders. It will be implemented after the cabinet approval,??? said Minister of State for Urban Development, Rao Inderjit Singh.

The Minister, highlighting the key features of the proposed scheme, said it would be implemented on a pilot basis initially in 103 cities and capital cities having more than five lakh population. Afterwards, other cities will be covered under the proposed scheme.

About Rs 70,000 crore funds would be required for the implementation the scheme, he said.

???It is proposed that 10% will be given by urban local bodies, 30% each by the Centre and states and the rest would be raised as loan by multilateral agencies,??? Singh added.

The proposed scheme would involve setting up of footpaths, cycle tracks, public bike sharing, bus rapid transit (BRT) systems, intelligent transport system, urban freight management and innovating financing for transport systems and progressively shift to usages of hybrid/electric and non-fossil fuels for public transport.
