The corporation of Vellore has made a decision to spruce up the Vellore fort, along with its surrounding areas under the central government’s Smart City Mission in order to promote tourism and heritage of the city.
Officials in the corporation stated that they had identified 1,600 acres of land in and around the Vellore fort, which covers CMC Hospital, district court complex, collectorate, and surrounding areas in 11 wards in the corporation. The total cost of the project would be 934.23 crore under the Smart City that would benefit 95,488 people and 7,317 private firms. Of the total 934.23 crore, the Central government would contribute is 467.12 crore. The corporation would also take up development projects at a cost of 133.50 crore under public-private partnership, while development works at a cost of 347 crore would be implemented through inter-departments such as NHAI and State Highway to improve the facilities in the city. The objective of the project is ‘Model Swachh City’ with improved and the responsible service delivery system that promote medical, heritage, education and tourism.
“Medical, heritage, education and tourism are the lifeline of the Vellore City. So, we are giving paramount importance to these sectors under the Smart City project,” said corporation engineer T Balasubramanian.
The development project has been devised under two heads – Area Based Development (ABD) and Pan-City Initiative. Under ABD, prime areas such as Collectorate, Court and Vellore Old and New Bus Stands have been taken up. These areas would have state-of-art facilities from basic amenities, added the official.
Under Pan-City Initiative, the corporation assured all the citizen of the city that they would access to common facilities and get an equal share from water distribution, medical facility and transportation.
